Storm Surge Atlas

Cairns Queensland Australia

Welcome

The ‘Storm Surge Atlas for the Cairns Coast’ project was developed to identify realistic storm surge inundation that can occur in a tropical cyclone event.

In Tropical Australia the risk from tropical cyclones is significant and increasing as much of the population inhabits low lying coastal regions.

The aim of this project is to reduce risk by enhancing community awareness of the storm surge hazard.

Each map in this atlas represents a different cyclone scenario as individual cyclones will produce different surge inundation levels and any one cyclone will generate different surge heights along the Cairns coast.

Existing maps of 'storm surge' show the level of your property above sea level rather than the actual storm surge inundation experienced during different cyclone events. The maps presented here show these actual storm surge inundations.

You can use these maps during a real cyclone event by using the drop down boxes on the 'Storm surge maps' page and choosing the cyclone characteristics issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

It is important to remember that you should always follow the advice of the Bureau of Meteorology, local authorities and emergency service personnel during a real cyclone event.
